Setting the Ideal temperature of Your House

22 Jan 2024

Do you think you always feel bothered about the thermostat temperature? Is there too cold in the morning and very hot in the afternoon?  Do you sometimes wake up during the middle of the night, shivering or sweating? It can take several years of experimentation to find the right temperature at the right time of the day in your house. Go through this guide on ideal temperature of your house that will help you to take an informed decision about your family all the year while at the same time, preserve the energy.

What is the ideal temperature for a house?

Everyone has different idea about the estimated temperature of a house. When you are far from home, the suggested temperature of thermostat during the winter is somewhere between 62 and 66 °F.  But in reality, the average range is somewhere between 68 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit. The ideal room temperature will differ based on the activity, area of your home and season.

The normal temperature is nearly 70 degrees Fahrenheit during winter time. In the summer, some would like to keep their house cool at almost 68 degrees Fahrenheit. You would like to consider which area of your house is mostly used and what temperature seem to be comfortable in the setting.

For example, if the air conditioning units for bedroom are situated on the top floor and there is one thermostat only for regulating the temperature of the entire house, you would want to keep the thermostat at a lower temperature. This can be 65 to 68 degrees so that you do not overheat the bedrooms.

What temperature do you need to set for winters?

The thermostat setting for the winter is higher when compared to setting of thermostat in the summer. The expected setting of a thermostat during the winter will depend on the time of the day and whether you are at home or not.

The ideal home temperature should not be higher than 68 degrees Fahrenheit or 20 degrees Celsius. When you are at home during the day, you feel quite comfortable at this temperature.

But when you are away from home, the estimated thermostat temperature in winter is between 17 and 19 °C or 62 and 66 °F.

However, you should not turn down the thermostat which is very low. If your thermostat is lower than 17 °C or 62 °F, then this might cause water pipes freezing and thus, costly repairs.

What temperature should you set in the summer?

For summer, the ideal thermostat temperature should be 25 degree Celsius or 78 degrees Fahrenheit when you are at home.

You should set the daytime temperature at 78 degrees F (26 degrees C as this can save you 12 % in energy pounds when compared to setting temperature of the thermostat to 74 degrees F.

What is the ideal temperature of different rooms of your house?

The temperature of your house should be somewhere between 18 °C and 20°C throughout the year. This is a good ambient temperature, ensuring your home is not very hot or cold. In order to attain this temperature, you need to keep the rooms warmer during the summer months and colder in the winter season. As each room has an ideal temperature to set and improve your comfort, it is important to avoid overheating or over-cooling your home.

  • Living room – The temperature should be somewhere between 20°C and 22°C as you will remain less active in this space. Most people spend their time sitting in the living room and this means the body temperature may be cooler. During the winter, you may keep the living space warmer than other areas of the house. For summer months, it should be cool and comfortable with proper insulation in the living area.
  • Bathroom – The bathroom should be warmer than other rooms in the house, particularly when you want to take a bath or a shower. When you step out of hot shower in a cold room, this may put you at greater risk of falling ill. The ideal temperature should be between 22°C and 24°C to make you feel comfortable and lessen humidity and moisture causing dampness and mould.
  • Bedroom – Your bedroom should be warm like the living space. The ideal bedroom temperature is 16°C and 19°C for keeping the room hot and may impact quality of your sleep. If it is the bedroom of your child, then they should be somewhat warmer and between 17°C and 20°C.
  • Kitchen – The cooking area gets warm when you cook food though it is necessary to regulate overall temperature of the room. Obviously, you want the kitchen to remain in the temperature between 18°C and 20°C. This can lessen the humidity caused due to cooking, leading to the growth of bacteria and mould.
  • Hallways and entranceways – The right temperature of this area should be between 15°C and 18°C in the winter. For the summer months, you do not need to cool the space like other rooms and so, hallways can be kept warmer.

What is the perfect room temperature for sleeping in summer?

Saving on energy costs while you are sleep in the summer can be tricky. This is because a lot of people find it difficult to fall asleep in a hot room.

The temperature at which you sleep should be on the cooling side before you close your eyes during the night. This will help your chances of getting healthy and uninterrupted sleep every night.

The room temperature should ideally be somewhere between 60 and 67°F for healthy sleep in summer. Both toddlers and infant should be able to sleep in these temperatures with proper sleep outfit.

What is the best room temperature for sleeping in winter?

You need to bring down the temperature back to 62 degrees before getting ready for going to bed in the winter. You can wear warm pants and thick comforter to make you feel warm and cozy while lowering energy costs. Make sure you program the thermostat to restart 68 degrees before the alarm rings in the morning.

What is the best temperature for a vacant house?

When you are away from home for a longer time span, make sure you adjust the temperature to save energy pounds.

You need to set the temperature by around 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit for a vacant house. This is because it will prevent water pipes from freezing and reduce energy bills.

Most of the time, bringing down your thermostat to 50 °F to save some heating bill can be fine. You do not need to set your thermostat very high when the plumbing runs inside the interior walls.

If there are pipes in the exterior walls of your house, then you need to set your thermostat higher somewhere between 55 ℉ or 60 ℉. This can warm the house and keep your pipes in the wall above the freezing temperature.
